Stereoisomerism

Compounds can have the same molecular formula and connectivity while still existing in different arrangements in three-dimensional space. Building on our understanding of structural isomerism, we can now explore stereoisomerism and, in particular, how restricted rotation around carbon–carbon double bonds gives rise to E/Z isomers. This leads naturally to the CIP priority rules, which provide a systematic way to identify and name these stereoisomers.
