As the number and complexity of organic compounds increases, a consistent system for naming them becomes essential for communicating their structures clearly. Building on our understanding of chemical formulae, homologous series and functional groups, we can now explore nomenclature and the IUPAC rules used to name organic compounds. These conventions will then provide an important foundation for recognising and discussing the different structures and isomers encountered throughout organic chemistry.
