The properties that make alkanes useful fuels also make them important sources of energy, but using them comes with environmental consequences. Building on our understanding of alkanes and combustion, we can now explore the pollutants produced when alkanes are used as fuels, the problems they cause and the different ways their emissions can be reduced. This provides an important context for understanding the wider challenges of using fossil fuels and the search for more sustainable energy sources.
